A study by NIWA shows almost half of our river network is inaccessible to migratory fish. A further 36 percent could also be restricted but has not yet been assessed. NIWA is now studying the swimming capabilities of native fish to try and come up with a solution. Freshwater ecologist Dr. Paul Franklin joined Early Edition.
