E35: Feb 11th UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science - what about sport and exercise science?

from Trenerstudenten · host Universitetet i Sørøst-Norge

Since 2015, February 11th is dedicated as the UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This is an annual observance that aims to promote the full and equal access and participation of females in the STEM disciplines. Sport and exercise science as an interdisciplinary research field also include the STEM disciplines, i.e., science, technology, engineering, and medicine, yet it also involves other more social science and humanities disciplines. The global perspective is also of importance, as the conditions for female athletes, female participation in physical activity, and for female researchers vary in different parts of the world. In this episode, you will meet five female researchers from University of South-Eastern Norway, campus Bø in Telemark, representing three generations of research in sport and exercise. You will learn more about our research on women and girls in sport and exercise, and we will share our experiences with being female researchers within this field. You will also hear the funny story about how different informal dress codes for going to the gym in different parts of the world can provide cultural shock for an early career researcher. The guests in this episode are PhD-students Zohreh Abdhollakhani from Iran (research on female athletes in Iran), Eirini Pardali from Greece (research on pupils' voices in school-based physical activity) and Kyra Angerer from Germany (research on women's participation in sport in Saudi Arabia) together with Professor emerita Gerd von der Lippe from Norway (research on gender, media coverage in sport). Program host is professor Solfrid Bratland-Sanda from Norway (research on eating disorders, sport and exercise).Useful links:https://www.un.org/en/observances/women-and-girls-in-science-day https://www.womeninscienceday.org/https://www.unesco.org/en/days/women-girls-science
