E43: April 6th: UN International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

from Trenerstudenten · host Universitetet i Sørøst-Norge

"Sport has the power to change the world, and it is a core tool to strengthen social ties and promote sustainable development, peace, solidarity, and respect for all." These are the words of the United Nations, which in 2013 established April 6th as the UN International Day of Sport for Peace and Development. This day is a celebration of the power of sport in social change, community development, and creating peace. But what do we know about sport in the perspective of sustainable development? How can sport be beneficial for refugees, army veterans and other vulnerable and challenged groups? And what is the scientific evidence-base for sport as a tool in development and peace? In this episode, you will learn from the experiences with Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) programs. You will also learn more about the challenges of such programs, and what potentials such programs have in the postpandemic world. Guests in this episode are Richard Giulianotti, professor in sport sociology at Loughborough university in UK and at University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) campus Bø, and Hans Hognestad, professor in sport at USN campus Bø. Host is Solfrid Bratland-Sanda, professor in exercise science and physical activity and health and USN campus Bø.Relevant links to this episode:https://www.un.org/en/observances/sport-dayhttps://www.unesco.org/en/days/sport-development-and-peacehttps://olympics.com/ioc/idsdpUNESCO Fit for life: https://www.unesco.org/en/fit4life
