E65: Balancing Faith and Discernment in a Divided World

from Wealth Well Done · host With Eric Scovill

As the lines between the physical and spiritual realms continue to blur, how can Christians responsibly engage with the pressing issues of our time without succumbing to extremism or oversimplification?  In this episode, Eric Scovill sits down with Isaac Schafer, a pastor and theological scholar known for his balanced, biblical perspective. Together, they delve into the complex interplay between the spiritual and practical realms, navigating the challenges of current events through the lens of God's truth.  From the assassination attempt on President Trump to the nuances of salvation and holiness, this conversation explores the delicate balance required to address sensitive topics with wisdom and discernment. Here are some topics from today’s discussion: Navigating the bias and spiritual influences in current events Understanding the concept of "footholds" and demonic influence Exploring the simplicity and complexity of salvation Examining the Old Testament perspective on holiness and the cross Finding balance when addressing cultural and spiritual issues as Christians   Episode Highlights: [09:16] How Human Choices Can Open Doors for Demonic Influence The concept of "footholds" refers to how our choices and thought patterns can open the door for demonic influence. The most basic form of a foothold is a way of thinking that goes against God's instructions, such as indulging in alcohol despite biblical warnings against drunkenness. True change comes from renewing the mind to align with God's will, as the enemy first attacks our thought life in an attempt to lead us down a path of rebellion that can then invite more severe spiritual oppression. [11:13] The Spiritual World and Its Rebellion Against God The biblical teaching is that God first created the spiritual realm, including angels who later rebelled against Him. When humans also rebel against God, it opens the door for a partnership between physical and spiritual rebellion, which inevitably leads to chaos and destruction. The importance is placed on believing the Bible's account of the spiritual world and not relying solely on external teachings or interpretations. [19:21] Exploring the Simplicity and Complexity of Salvation Salvation itself is not complicated - it is about acknowledging Jesus as Lord. However, there are additional layers and nuances that can make it appear more complex. The key is being able to distill the core of salvation down to its most fundamental parts, while still appreciating the richness and depth of the biblical teachings on the topic. True mastery comes from understanding the overall canon of Scripture and being able to communicate the essence of salvation in a clear, concise way. [26:39] The True Meaning of Holiness The biblical understanding of holiness is not merely about being sinless, but about being designated as holy and set apart by God. Just because someone is free from sin does not automatically make them holy in God's sight. True holiness can only come from being designated as such by the one who is holy - God himself.
