¿Qué sucederá a los ecosistemas terrestres actuales cuando la temperatura media del planeta se eleve varios grados, debido al aumento de efecto invernadero? Una forma de buscar la respuesta al problema consiste en mirar hacia atrás en el tiempo y estudiar lo sucedido momentos de la historia terrestre que tengan similitudes con el cambio actual. Uno de esos momentos sucedió al final de la última glaciación. Entonces se inició un cambio climático que elevó la temperatura media de la Tierra entre 4 y 7ºC, en un periodo entre los 16.000 y 10.000 años antes del presente. Ciertos cálculos sugieren que dentro de los próximos 150 años sufriremos un cambio de similar magnitud. Un grupo internacional de científicos, entre los que figura Claudio Latorre, ha recogido la información de los cambios que tuvieron lugar en los ecosistemas de 594 lugares distintos del planeta durante aquel periodo del pasado y los datos recopilados permitirán elaborar modelos y hacer proyecciones que nos den una idea de lo que sucederá en el futuro inmediato.
