Gli scienziati hanno concluso che a est delle Montagne Rocciose nordamericane un tempo esisteva un grande mare poco profondo. Questo mare era largo centinaia di miglia e si estendeva dall’attuale Oceano Artico al Messico. Lungo la costa piatta c’erano foreste lussureggianti e paludose. I fossili suggeriscono che molti tipi di dinosauri prosperassero in questo ambiente ecologico. Sembra che l’edmontosauro, un dinosauro dal becco d’anatra lungo circa 9 m, brucasse in mandrie – come le mucche – attraverso la palude. Le impronte di tre dita ben conservate e il contenuto fossilizzato dello stomaco hanno portato i paleontologi a questa conclusione.
