La Vía Láctea es un enorme conglomerado de estrellas distribuidas en un disco que tiene 100.000 años-luz de diámetro. Nosotros vivimos a 26.000 años luz del centro galáctico, un centro en el que se aglutinan, formando un bulbo enorme, miles de millones de estrellas, tan cercanas unas a otras que, si estuviéramos allí, su luz inundaría por igual el día y la noche. Todo lo que allí existe se mueve alrededor de un objeto, un agujero negro, que contiene 4 millones de masas solares. Lo conocemos como Sagitario A* y a su alrededor, la teoría de la Relatividad General predice que el espacio-tiempo está perturbado de manera significativa. Un grupo de científicos, entre los que se encuentra nuestro invitado, el científico de origen alemán Rainer Schödel, investigador del CSIC en el Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía donde dirige el Grupo del Centro Galáctico, ha comprobado que el comportamiento de una estrella que gira cerca de Sagitario A* concuerda con las predicciones de la Teoría General de la Relatividad.
