¿Qué posibles causas y ventajas consiguen las plantas caducifolias con los magníficos colores que las hojas adquieren antes de caer durante el otoño? Los científicos buscan repuestas y no faltan hipótesis para ello. La disminución de la clorofila ante la escasa iluminación solar otoñal deja a la vista los carotenoides, de color amarillento. Algunas especies de plantas generan antocianinas, de color rojo, aunque no se sabe muy bien la razón.
