Cuando un paciente recibe la noticia de que su tumor ha desaparecido tras la cirugía o la quimioterapia, siente que la pesadilla ha terminado y la vida vuelve a abrirse ante sus ojos. Sin embargo, en muchos casos la enfermedad regresa meses o años después. ¿Cómo es posible que el cáncer vuelva cuando aparentemente todas las células tumorales habían sido eliminadas? Una parte importante de la respuesta podría encontrarse en un pequeño grupo de células muy especiales: las llamadas células madre cancerosas.
