Hoy vamos a hablar de historia de la historia, porque el artículo que Jorge Laborda escribía en enero del año 2001 hablaba de lo que consideraba el descubrimiento científico más importante del siglo XX. Aún limitándonos a las ciencias biológicas, las dudas son numerosas. ¿Debemos otorgar el título a Thomas Morgan, el americano que comenzó a estudiar la genética de la mosca del vinagre y que tantos secretos ha permitido descubrir? ¿Será el título compartido por James Watson y Francis Crick, descubridores de la estructura en doble hélice del ADN? ¿Será para Alexander Fleming, descubridor de la penicilina? ¿Será para Frederick Sanger, inventor de métodos de secuenciación de proteínas y ADN, cuyo invento ha permitido secuenciar el genoma de varias especies? En su opinión, el premio al descubrimiento del siglo XX no debe ser otorgado a ninguno de los descubrimientos mencionados antes, sino a Ostwall Avery por el descubrimiento de que es el ADN el portador de la información genética.
