Probablemente, alguna vez una médico o enfermero te ha golpeado suavemente en la parte inferior de la rodilla con un pequeño martillo para estimular un reflejo. Este reflejo, consistente en una contracción muscular involuntaria que desencadena una patadita, recibe el poco imaginativo nombre de reflejo de estiramiento muscular y es la respuesta muscular más rápida frente a estímulos mecánicos. El reflejo se desencadena porque, al golpear con suavidad el llamado tendón patelar —situado bajo la patela de la rodilla— este transmite la tensión al músculo cuádriceps, localizado en la parte superior del muslo. Este músculo, posee un centro sensorial capaz de detectar las contracciones o estiramientos y de desencadenar una reacción para compensarlos.
