¿Qué molécula confiere al aire el olor a tierra mojada tan particular tras una tormenta o un chaparrón? Las gotas de lluvia al caer forman pequeñas burbujas que al explotar generan aerosoles, minúsculas gotitas que al flotar en el aire transportan con ellas un olor carácterístico. El olor a tierra mojada se debe a una sola molécula llamada "geosmina". La geosmina es una molécula volátil, es decir, que se evapora y pasa con facilidad al aire. Es producida por varias especies de bacterias del suelo, e impregna la tierra y los restos orgánicos. La abundancia de la geosmina en el suelo y su volatilidad la convirtieron en una molécula muy ventajosa para la supervivencia de algunas especies, en particular para las que habitan regiones donde el agua es escasa como los camellos o dromedarios ¿Por qué es importante para algunas bacterias producir la geosmina?
