Una tarde de abril de 1929, un periodista en Moscú entró al consultorio de Alexander Luria con un problema bastante inusual: nunca olvidaba. Luria, neurofisiólogo, se puso en la tarea de someter a prueba a quien luego se conocería como "M". Lo hizo poniéndolo a memorizar largas listas de números y palabras, poemas y fórmulas científicas, todo recitado y repetido luego por M, sin una falla. Décadas más tarde, M todavía recordaba todo, cuando fue probado de nuevo. Pero la habilidad de M para recordar venía con un estorbo y no uno cualquiera para su vida cotidiana. La tenía difícil a la hora de entender conceptos abstractos o el lenguaje figurativo y era malísimo reconociendo caras pues las había memorizado en un punto exacto del tiempo, con todas las expresiones y gestos.
