Hace tres décadas, en los años noventa, la biología molecular revolucionó la clasificación de los seres vivos. Hasta entonces, las clasificaciones estaban basadas exclusivamente en caracteres anatómicos, lo que en muchos casos indujo a error. Por ejemplo, se creía que los parientes más cercanos de los hipopótamos eran los cerdos y jabalíes hasta que la genética demostró que están más próximos a los rumiantes. Pero lo más sorprendente es que tampoco los rumiantes son los parientes más cercanos de los hipopótamos; los parientes vivos más cercanos de los hipopótamos son... los cetáceos, o sea, las ballenas y delfines.
