Existe toda una rama de la ciencia, la paleopalinología, que se dedica a rescatar los granos de polen atrapados en los sedimentos de lagos o turberas, para identificar las familias de plantas que las generaron y conocer cómo era el ambiente en el lugar en tiempos pasados. Pero los logros de la paleopalinología van más allá aún, como nos cuenta hoy el palinólogo José Antonio López Sáez, investigador del Instituto de Historia del CSIC, quien ha participado en un estudio que revela, gracias al polen recogido en 261 lugares repartidos por toda Europa, datos desconocidos sobre la gran pandemia de la Peste Negra que acabó con la mitad de la población europea entre 1347 y 1352.
