Los fósiles de Messel, un yacimiento situado en el centro-oeste de Alemania, 35 kilómetros al sudeste de Frankfurt, se formaron durante el Eoceno medio, hace unos 47 millones de años. Por aquel entonces, la región era una selva subtropical situada en una zona muy activa geológicamente. En el yacimiento se han encontrado esqueletos completos totalmente articulados, contenidos estomacales, pieles, plumas, tejidos blandos... en un estado de conservación excelente. Se ha propuesto que la abundancia de animales terrestres encontrados en el yacimiento se podría explicar por erupciones límnicas como la que ocurrió en 1986 en el lago Nyos, en Camerún, cuando la liberación súbita del dióxido de carbono disuelto en el agua del lago mató a unas mil ochocientas personas y varios miles de cabezas de ganado. Otra teoría, avalada por la presencia de trazas de toxinas en los sedimentos, apunta a un envenenamiento estacional de las aguas del lago debido al florecimiento de cianobacterias.
