Embracing Neurodiversity & FASD: a Candid Conversation with Jodee Kulp

from Living with FASD · host Patricia Kasper

Living with FASD is an educational & human interest show for those living with the effects of prenatal exposure to alcohol, their loved ones, & anyone interested in learning more about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), brought to you by someone with both professional & living experience with FASD. In this enlightening episode, I am privileged to welcome Jodee Kulp, an esteemed advocate in FASD circles with a wealth of knowledge & personal insight into FASD. Jodee brings to the conversation a profound understanding of the "normal" that comes with neurodiversity, sharing her family's journey through the lens of both a parent and an individual with FASD. We discuss the societal stigmas, the challenges of navigating the medical community, & the poignant reminder that embracing neurodiversity enriches our collective tapestry. Jodee was raised in a rural family, was exposed to alcohol prenatally & has wisdom in lived experience. Since the diagnosis of her daughter in 1997, Jodee Kulp has been an advocate for FASD. She has authored & contributed to 12 books & curricula on FASD, helping thousands of families & professionals. Jodee is an internationally recognized speaker, trainer & advocate, has co-founded the International Red Shoes Rock & developed the Expanding Mindz with Canines Program. Her current project is Embracing Zak, a novel & feature film to build FASD Awareness. "Embracing Zak," is designed to resonate with neurotypical & neurodivergent readers alike. With its release on the horizon, "Embracing Zak" is set to be a cornerstone in FASD literature, offering a narrative that challenges FASD stigma & promises laughter, tears, and a deep connection to its characters. Listeners will also gain insights into the transformative role of service dogs in the lives of individuals with FASD. This episode is a testament to the power of understanding, the strength of community, & the potential for growth when we embrace the neurodiversity within us all.
