Emotional Security
Emotional Safety: More Than Love Some people live in large, peaceful homes, yet they don't feel emotionally safe. Others may have very little, but when they walk through their front door, they feel they have a place where they are accepted. The difference is not always in outward circumstances. Sometimes, it lies in what psychologists call emotional safety. Emotional safety means being able to express your feelings and needs without fear of humiliation, disrespect, or rejection. This is different from momentary expressions of affection. Someone may repeatedly say, “I love you,” yet criticize or humiliate the other person whenever they make a mistake. In such situations, loving words alone cannot create lasting emotional security. Emotional safety develops when the behavior of family members is reasonably predictable. It means knowing that if you're upset, someone will talk with you instead of making fun of your feelings. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
