English Edition - Ep 7 : Caught in the Crossfire: Medical Social Workers in Healthcare Disputes

from 醫務社工不藏私 · host 胖妹 & 李さん

Medical disputes’ and ‘healthcare conflicts’—these are words that make everyone in the medical field break out in a cold sweat. The first reaction? Worry, stress, helplessness, even fear. The second? ‘Oh no… why me?!’ Medical disputes are tough in every healthcare system. Why? Because outcomes don’t always meet expectations. Patients come to the hospital hoping to walk out healthier—but no matter how advanced medicine is, the human body is full of mysteries and risks. When outcomes don’t match expectations, emotions can explode. And in these fiery, high-pressure situations, medical social workers are often the ones pushed to the front. We’re expected to provide emotional support, empathy, conflict de-escalation, and even to turn harsh words into something soft enough to heal. Since January 2024, with the official implementation of the Act for the Prevention and Resolution of Medical Incidents in Taiwan, medical social workers have even become legally designated members of the Care Team. That means within five days of an incident, we’re responsible for immediate care, communication, coordination, and often mediation—an emotionally draining role. We’re paid by the hospital, but expected to rebuild trust between patients and providers, balancing the raw emotions of families with the boundaries of the institution. It’s a constant struggle of loyalty, pressure, and expectations. So in this episode, let’s give medical social workers a chance to vent—and share what it’s really like to be caught in the middle of medical disputes. Shhh… let’s just hope the officials up in Taipei don’t hear this one!
