English Edition - Episode 16: Volunteer Management - The Saga Continues

from 醫務社工不藏私 · host 胖妹 & 李さん

Volunteer management… truly one of the most challenging subjects in social work.” The Volunteer Service Act says that volunteer work exists to “integrate human resources, allow citizens willing to serve to contribute effectively, promote the spirit of service, improve public affairs, and enhance the quality of life.” You know… the usual fancy wording. But let’s talk about real life. Recently, when the Mataian landslide and flooding hit Guangfu in Hualien, images spread across social media on September 23rd. And almost instantly, volunteers began pouring in— the shovel superheroes, the excavator superheroes, the emotional-support superheroes… You name it. They embodied the true meaning of volunteerism: the willingness that comes from inside, the spontaneous joining together, the giving of time and strength, the power of collective effort over individual struggle, and the fulfillment that goes beyond the material— something deeply human and deeply moving. These “superheroes” taught us more than we could ever teach them. Their actions were a lesson in pure volunteer spirit. But then… we return to our everyday workplaces. And what do we face? Trying to convince paid staff in hospitals or institutions to treat volunteers with respect— not as free labor, not as replacement manpower— is already a monumental challenge. And on top of that, the government keeps urging us to “innovate” and “effectively utilize senior volunteers” in this ultra-aging society. Honestly? It’s exhausting. Sometimes it feels like every volunteer team is becoming a mini day-care center for older adults. So how do we mobilize volunteerism, especially senior volunteers, in a way that truly creates a healthy, happy, energetic, and age-friendly society? Our small brains… and even smaller courage… can only keep trying. Join Lee-san and Pammei as we continue this journey— venting, analyzing, laughing, and figuring out how to keep volunteer management alive and meaningful.
