English Edition - Episode 22: Spiritual Support and Organizational Culture

from 醫務社工不藏私 · host 胖妹 & 李さん

‘You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its flavor, how can it be made salty again? You are the light of the world… Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.’ (Matthew 5:13–16)” A passage from Scripture— yet it speaks powerfully to why spiritual support and organizational culture are so essential to our self-restoration. Why do medical social workers often carry such overwhelming pressure compared to other professionals in healthcare? Because our cases are rarely ones we actively seek— they are referrals, emergencies, and sudden calls for help that come to us. Because we are constantly facing life’s hardest realities: domestic violence, sexual assault, medical disputes, and deeply tangled family conflicts. Because professional recognition for medical social workers is relatively fragile, we often have to encourage ourselves and lean on our values and beliefs to sustain the foundation of our work. And because— we don’t have performance bonuses to measure our worth. Dear friends— learning and practicing spiritual resilience the ability to sense, connect, and reflect beyond time and circumstance allows us to face even the most difficult situations and still push through the thorns. Perhaps what lies before us now feels like an insurmountable barrier, something that brings despair. But when we widen our perspective and stretch our sense of time, light and hope will eventually appear. We need to open our spiritual eyes to see—and to receive—the blessings that are still on their way. Perhaps we are so used to caring for others that we forget to love and protect ourselves. May you and I, before lighting the way for others, first return to the light within— to heal, to recover, and then to begin again. Organizational Actions for Building a Culture of Spiritual SupportHealthcare organizations should cultivate a culture of spiritual supportto reduce burnout among helping professionals.Leadership should design systems that care for employees’psychological and spiritual well-being.Organizations should provide resilience trainingand offer ongoing individual and group support.Systems should be established to detect and preventhigh-risk signs of occupational burnout and compassion fatigue.
