English Edition — Episode 30: Social Work Practicum—More Than Just Completing the Required Weeks

from 醫務社工不藏私 · host 胖妹 & 李さん

Social Work Practicum — More Than Just Completing the Required Weeks“When students hear the word ‘practicum,’many feel nervous.” Where do I even begin?Which placement is better? Will I pass? Will I survive? And when practicum season arrives, placement agencies are thinking too: Who will be the supervisor this year? What kind of students will we receive?🌱 To the students:Practicum is not a test of how much you already know. It’s a process of discovering how you learn. Supervisors are not only looking at your ability. They are watching your attitude.Your reflection.Your responsibility.Your openness to feedback. Are there qualities that make a supervisor think,“I’d like to teach this student a little more”? Practicum is not just training for now.It is training for skills you will use for a lifetime—how to listen, how to tolerate uncertainty, how to stay grounded under pressure, how to reflect instead of react.🤍 To the supervisors:You deserve a hug. You worry:What should I teach? How much is enough? Will the student feel they truly learned something? You carry teaching pressure and professional risk. You worry about what might happenwhen the student is out of your sight. And in between your daily workload, you review journals, weekly reflections, case notes, meeting records… So many details. So many invisible tasks. But here’s the truth: Practicum is not only the responsibility of the placement agency. Universities must also take responsibility—to understand students’ characteristics,to match them with appropriate settings,to communicate clearly with agencies, and to monitor students’ adaptation throughout the process. “Practicum quality assurance”cannot be a one-sided burden. We hope— That we can improve practicum systems.Reduce professional burnout.Ensure practicum time is not wasted.Help students grow more mature. And help supervisors feel understood. Because practicumis not about filling weeks. It is about building professionals—together.
