(English) Episode 215-Knee Models Need Better Biological Data

This systematic review examines the mechanical properties of human knee tissues and their application within finite element (FE) computational models. The authors identify a significant lack of standardized data, noting that current models frequently rely on a "mixed" patchwork of material properties from different ages, species, and anatomical locations. While new engineering techniques like nanoindentation allow for precise measurements of cartilage and bone, most existing research fails to provide a cohesive baseline for healthy versus osteoarthritic states. Consequently, it remains difficult to create subject-specific simulations that accurately reflect the physiological changes associated with ageing or disease progression. The text concludes that future biomechanical research should prioritize collecting data from homogeneous donor cohorts to improve the predictive accuracy of whole-joint models.
