(English) Episode 234-Smartphones Are Destroying Medical Students Necks
from Health Physio+ · host Arthromainpod
This research article investigates the high prevalence of neck and shoulder pain among university students in Saudi Arabia, specifically linking these issues to smartphone usage. By surveying over 800 healthcare students, the authors identified that a previous history of pain and the total hours spent studying on mobile devices are the most accurate predictors of how long symptoms last. Interestingly, the study found that right-handed users were more likely to suffer from increased pain severity, possibly due to repetitive strain and posture habits while typing. The data suggests that prolonged neck flexion and single-handed phone use contribute significantly to musculoskeletal strain in this population. Ultimately, the researchers advocate for preventive strategies, such as taking frequent breaks and alternating hands, to mitigate these physical risks. The findings highlight a growing health concern as digital learning becomes more integrated into modern higher education.(Maayah MF, Nawasreh ZH, Gaowgzeh RAM, Neamatallah Z, Alfawaz SS, Alabasi UM.
