Research in mouse models indicates that a peripheral molecular oscillator controls the daily synthesis and removal of a "chronomatrix," which protects the permanent collagen structure of the tissue. Recent human studies suggest that chronic overuse injuries are associated with a dampened or disrupted internal rhythm, potentially leading to extracellular matrix breakdown. Scientists are now investigating whether timed exercise therapy can effectively resynchronize these tissue clocks to improve clinical outcomes for patients.
