(English) Episode 261-Build muscle with blood flow restriction
from Health Physio+ · host Arthromainpod
This 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis investigates the effectiveness of low-load resistance training combined with blood flow restriction (LL-BFR) compared to traditional high-load resistance training (HL-RT) in untrained men. The researchers analyzed 13 studies to determine how these methods influence muscle strength and hypertrophy. While findings indicate that high-load training generally produces superior strength gains, LL-BFR achieves comparable results when using individualized pressure, intermittent cuff inflation, and a higher volume of sessions. Notably, both techniques were found to be equally effective at increasing muscle mass. Consequently, the authors suggest that LL-BFR is a viable alternative for individuals who cannot handle heavy weights due to age or injury. These results highlight the importance of tailored pressure settings to maximize the physiological benefits of training with restricted circulation.Chang H, Zhang J, Yan J, Yang X, Chen B, Zhang J.
