(English) Episode 275-How Your Shoulder Diagnosis Sabotages Recovery
from Health Physio+ · host Arthromainpod
This qualitative study explores how a diagnosis of subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS) influences a patient’s understanding of their shoulder pain and their subsequent expectations for recovery. The researchers found that medical professionals primarily rely on biomedical explanations and imaging, which often leads patients to believe their issues are caused by physical structural damage like bone rubbing on tendons. This mechanical viewpoint can create significant barriers to physiotherapy, as patients may view exercise as ineffective or even harmful for a "physical" blockage. Because patient expectations are a major predictor of clinical success, the study warns that the current terminology used by clinicians might unintentionally discourage engagement with conservative treatments. Ultimately, the authors recommend that healthcare providers use more mindful language to avoid fostering fear and to improve the likelihood of positive outcomes without unnecessary surgery.(Cuff A, Littlewood C.
