(English) Episode 281-Restricting Recovery Blood Flow for Elite Performance
from Health Physio+ · host Arthromainpod
This research investigates how applying blood-flow restriction (BFR) exclusively during rest intervals affects high-level athletes performing repeated-sprint exercise. By studying national-level badminton players, the authors found that restricting circulation between sets significantly increases metabolic stress and muscle deoxygenation without reducing the athletes' actual power output. While the mechanical quality of the sprints remained stable, the intervention led to higher perceived exertion, increased leg discomfort, and a more pronounced temporary decline in vertical jump performance. These findings suggest that inter-set BFR acts as a practical tool to intensify the training stimulus while preserving the necessary work volume. However, the greater reduction in explosive power indicates that coaches must carefully manage the resulting neuromuscular fatigue. Ultimately, the study highlights a method to enhance physiological strain in elite populations without compromising the quality of high-intensity efforts.(Zheng T, Jiang L, Chen Y, Bao D, Girard O.
