(English) Episode 284-Why Copenhagen Planks Beat Heavy Squats
from Health Physio+ · host Arthromainpod
This study utilized neuromusculoskeletal modeling to analyze how eight different resistance exercises load individual hip adductor muscles. Researchers discovered that the Copenhagen adduction exercise is the most effective movement for generating high forces across nearly all muscles in the adductor group. In contrast, heavy hip-extension exercises like the deadlift and squat specifically maximize loading on the ischiocondylar portion of the adductor magnus. The data suggest that movements like the lateral slide provide a unique benefit by maximizing muscle fiber lengthening and passive tension. These findings allow practitioners to rank exercises into tiers to better guide athlete performance, injury prevention, and rehabilitation. Ultimately, the study highlights that exercise selection must be tailored to target specific muscles within the adductor complex based on their distinct anatomical functions.(Collings TJ, Horsman A, Hams AH, McGill A, Watts D, Hambly MJ, et al.
