EP 10 | Donny Teachout

Donny Teachout is a host, rapper, comedian, and poet from Staten Island, New York. Originally from Brooklyn, Donny talks about his upbringing and what got him started as an entertainer. Donny hosts the weekly Table Open Mic at The Hop Shoppe in Staten Island, New York. He started hosting the Table Open Mic in 2016 and he talks about how he got started hosting that event. He talks about how being involved with preaching, worship teams, and youth groups when he was younger got him started with performing. He started performing when he was 18 and this led to performing Hip-Hop and Rap music in the 1990s, his first live performance being in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. He performed as a rapper throughout the U.S. and went on to perform in California, Texas, and Florida. He began involvement with worship team The Timothy Project which took him to Norway to perform rap music in the Summer of 2000. He later talked about what plans he has for the future including hosting more events on Staten island as well as an album to be released later on in 2022. Eddie Murphy was a huge comedic influence on Donny as his Raw and Delirious specials had a huge impact on his development as a comedian. We talk about the challenges of being a host and how Donny’s main mission is to create an environment that uplifts people. He talked about his love for putting together events and how his ultimate plan before he passes is to create a Staten Island Renaissance. To show what the borough has to offer in terms of it’s creative community. Later on we talk about the difference between hard work and talent and navigating social media as an artist. Donny’s opinion on whether or not its important to either be a jack of all trades or focus specifically on one or two strong suits. 2022 sees Donny looking to monetize his multi-faceted pursuits.
