After being treated harshly by her mistress, Sarai, a pregnant Hagar runs away to escape her difficult situation. But while she's on the run, the Angel of the LORD seeks Hagar out and instructs her to return to her mistress. Does God REALLY send Hagar back to an abusive situation and tell her she must endure? It's a delicate question, and maybe you've wrestled with it before. In the first episode of our ASK THE PASTOR BONUS SERIES, my senior teaching pastor, Joshua York, dives in and helps us with the context of the passage so we can understand the original author's intent (prescriptive vs descriptive); but he also speaks to the heart of the question and offers pastoral guidance in the event you find yourself in an abusive relationship.
