EP 105 When Being Alone Almost Killed Me! | In Conversation with John Weiman cplcHe was one of the top marriage therapists in the country. But when his life unraveled—divorce, death, isolation—his only companion became a bottle. One night, he walked into a hospital with stomach pain. Hours later, doctors told him his liver was failing. Two months to live. What followed was a battle for survival, self-esteem, and redemption so raw it will change how you see loneliness forever.Listen to My Secret Life with an Eating Disorder as Maureen Kritzer-Lange sits down with John Weiman—a man who went from being abandoned, addicted, and dying… to being reborn through courage, connection, and truth. Hear how he faced death four times, waited 12 years for a transplant, and discovered what it really means to be alone but not lonely.----------------After finishing his training at New York University, he began to work closely with Dr. James Masterson (The Masterson Institute)who was known throughout the world for his work with Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder. He worked for nine years at a long term psychiatric hospital named High Point Hospital in Rye Brook, New York. After nine years, due to family responsibilities, he left the field for twenty years. After his divorce, mother's death and a friend's death, he began to abuse alcohol. This came to a head 16 years ago when he walked into a hospital with stomach pain. After four hours of testing, they told him he was in complete liver failure and if he continued his behavior, he would be dead in two months. While dedicating himself to his health, he decided to return to the field of his dreams(psychology) He enrolled in The Gottman Institute which is world renowned for its research on what makes and breaks relationships. The Gottmans could predict with 95% accuracy what couples would thrive and what couples wouldn't. John has worked with over three thousand couples and has created a model for sessions that is not time limited. Typically, he meets with couples around three hours and the focus is on walking out of the session better than they walked in. He believes the couple gets further faster. In his experience, couples don't have the patience to meet once a week for an hour for three or four months.
