Ep.107 | Burmese artist Thee Oo Thazin on exploring her identity, the pressure to entertain, and raising environmental awareness.

from The Last Supper - Art in Asia · host Oscar Venhuis

In this episode of The Last Supper I speak with Burmese  artist Thee Oo Thazin, currently residing in Thailand's Songkhla province for an artist residency. Thee Oo Thazin shares insights into her artistic journey, from her early passion for drawing in Myanmar to her evolving work that explores themes of identity, societal expectations, and environmental issues. We discuss her most recent projects, including her series "Braids," which reflects on the burdens faced by women in Burmese society, and "Pressure to Entertain," which examines the pressures of social dynamics in the context of recent political turmoil.  We also touch on her collaborative work titled ‘Record of Rain’ with British artist Lauren Smith, focusing on environmental awareness through art. Thee Oo Thazin (1993, Yangon) graduated from the National Management College, Yangon, Myanmar, specialising in English for Professional Purposes in 2012 and worked as a copywriter in advertising agencies. Although drawing has been a major interest since a young age, digital art was introduced to her by her designer colleagues. She decided to learn fine arts and began attending LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore, specialising in Fine Arts (Graphic Novel) in 2017, graduating in 2020. She is now working as a freelance illustrator and full-time artist. Her works became well known among youths through social media in 2018. She participated in two group exhibitions: "Word Therapy" and "Building Bridges" in 2019, and another one called "Midsummer" in April 2022. "18/29" is her first solo show.More on www.thelastsupper.asia-----Christie's EducationEnjoy 15% Discount and Join a virtual or in-person art course, lecture, workshop, city or art gallery visit.
