EP 126 The Deadly History of Eating Disorders | In Conversation with Alice Weinreb Eating disorders didn’t suddenly appear in the 1970s—but that’s when they finally received a name and diagnoses began exploding worldwide. Maureen Kritzer-Lange joins historian Alice Weinreb to uncover how Karen Carpenter, Twiggy, Barbie, feminism, body image, and the treatment industry shaped our understanding of eating disorders—and why, despite decades of awareness, meaningful progress remains painfully limited.Alice Weinreb is an Associate Professor of History at Loyola University Chicago, where she teaches courses in women and gender, modern Europe, and the industrial food system. She is currently working on a book titled Troubled Appetites: Disordered Eating, Mental Illness, and the World We Live In.
