Ep# 135. Stigma & Suicide
from Operation Tango Romeo, the Trauma Recovery Podcast · host Mark Meincke
Stigma is a major barrier to seeking help. Stigma is created through misunderstanding what PTS Injuries are, and their negative impact on a person's quality of life. Stigma fuels a sense of shame in those who are injured, and this misplaced shame increases reluctance to ask for help and / or support for PTS Injuries. Further, the stigma often creates an inability to acknowledge or accept that the person is in fact injured. Without first acknowledging the injury, the suffering will continue in silence, often with catastrophic consequences on the life of the injured person. Ironically, the power of Stigma is often boosted by the very people who are trying to help those with PTS Injuries.
