後縱韌帶位於人類脊椎體的後緣，緊接其後的就是包含有脊髓的椎管。當它過度增生，進而鈣化並骨化（OPLL），且漸增厚，所占面積增加時，會造成椎管狹窄，嚴重時則壓迫脊髓與神經根，逐漸出現手腳無力麻木等輕重不同的症狀。
