Ep 145-Excuses vs Reasons: How to Move Forward Without Shame
from The Seed: Growing Your Business · host Lisa Resnick
Excuses vs Reasons: How to Move Forward Without Shame Before we start, I want to say something clearly: This is not about making you feel bad. Not about calling you out.Not about listing everything you’ve done “wrong.” It’s actually the opposite. This is about clarity.Compassion.And forward movement. Excuses vs Reasons (Let’s Define It Simply) We all use both. That’s not the issue. The difference is what happens after. What Is an Excuse? An excuse usually shows up when we’re protecting ourselves from discomfort. Not always consciously. Not maliciously. But there’s often: Avoidance Fear Ego protection Or just plain exhaustion It sounds like: “I don’t have time.” “I’ll start when things calm down.” “That’s just not how I am.” “I’ll never be as good as them anyway.” And here’s the key: Calling something an excuse is not about shame. It’s about asking: Am I protecting myself right now… or moving forward? What Is a Reason? A reason is grounded in reality. It’s honest.Specific.And includes some form of ownership. It sounds like: “I need to rest tonight, I’ll continue tomorrow.” “My priorities shifted, I need to reassess.” “I don’t have capacity today—but this still matters.” Reasons don’t shut the door. They adjust the path. Where It Gets Complicated (Because It Always Does) Sometimes: A reason becomes an excuse An excuse is actually burnout Or overwhelm… or grief… or fear That’s why compassion has to stay part of the conversation. Because growth is messy. And sometimes you’re doing your best…while knowing you can do better. That tension? That’s human. A Real-Life Example Let’s say you want to: Start a business Get back into fitness Have a difficult conversation You say: “I’m exhausted. I’ll rest tonight and do it tomorrow.” That’s a reason. But if three weeks pass… And it’s still “tomorrow”? Now we pause. Not for judgment. For awareness. The Biggest Difference: Ownership Reasons say: “This is what’s happening—and here’s how I’m adjusting.” Excuses say: “This is happening—so I can’t.” And yes—sometimes you truly can’t. Life happens. Health.Family.Stress.Finances. Those are real. But even then, the question becomes: How do I move forward within this reality? Not in spite of it. The Messy Middle (My Favorite Place) This is where real growth happens. You show up inconsistently—but you keep going You adjust after setbacks You don’t let the mess define you Excuses keep you stuck in the story. Reasons help you move through it. A Gentle Self-Check (No Judgment Allowed) Ask yourself: Am I avoiding discomfort or honoring capacity? Would I say this to someone I respect? Is this temporary—or becoming my pattern? What’s one small step forward right now? Notice: None of those ask if you’re failing. Because you’re not. The Real Question Isn’t This… It’s not: “Is this an excuse or a reason?” It’s: What am I going to do next? Because that’s where growth actually happens.
