from The Seed: Growing Your Business · host Lisa Resnick
Ep 147-Should You Host an Event? How to Plan Events That Actually Grow Your Business Let’s just get right to it: Hosting an event is not just picking a date, sending an invite, and hoping people show up. If you’ve ever hosted one—or even thought about it—you already know… It takes your time.Your energy.Your money. And honestly… your heart. And here’s the truth most people don’t talk about: Not every event that “looks successful” actually feels successful. Some fill the room and still leave you completely drained. Step One: Should You Even Host the Event? Before we get into how to host an event… We need to talk about whether you should be hosting one at all. Because events are one of the highest energy investments you can make in your business. So the real question isn’t: “Will this help my business grow?” (It probably will.) The real question is: Does this make sense for me right now? What Hosting an Event Actually Costs Let’s be honest about it: Money – venue, food, materials Time – planning, outreach, promotion Mental load – constantly thinking about it Energy – showing up, holding space, managing people Aftermath – because you don’t just walk away from an event So before you say yes, ask yourself: Do I actually have the capacity for this right now? The 5-Question Filter (Use This Before You Say Yes) 1. What is the real purpose of the event? Not just “inspiration.” Be specific: Lead generation Relationship building Revenue Visibility 2. Who is this for? Events are not for everyone. The more specific you are, the more powerful the experience becomes. 3. What does success actually look like? Not just attendance. Impact. Because a full room doesn’t mean a meaningful experience. 4. What is the real ROI? Is it: Money? Relationships? Trust? Content? Define it before you begin. 5. Does this align with my energy right now? This one matters more than people admit. Your life outside your business matters: Family Schedules Seasons of life If your energy isn’t aligned, the event will feel heavy—no matter how successful it looks. When an Event Is Actually Worth It An event makes sense when: It aligns with what you already do You’re clear on its purpose You can fully hold the space If not? You can say: No Or not right now Both are powerful decisions. Step Two: How to Host an Event That Actually Works Most people jump straight into logistics. Venue.Date.Invites. But that’s not what makes an event successful. Start With This Instead: How Do You Want People to Feel? Because people don’t remember: Your agenda Your slides Your schedule They remember: How they felt in the room. Do you want them to feel: Seen? Connected? Inspired? Comfortable? That’s your starting point. Connection Over Content (This Is Where Events Win or Lose) Most events focus on: Speakers Structure Schedules But forget: Interaction Conversation Real connection And that’s where they fall flat. Because the most valuable part of an event is often: What happens between people—not on stage. Keep It Simple (Seriously) You do not need: A huge space Over-the-top decor A packed schedule Simple works better. Because: People are more present Energy is more relaxed Connection happens naturally Overcomplication = burnout (for you and them) The Follow-Up Is Where the Real ROI Happens This is where most people drop the ball. After the event: Who are you following up with? How are you continuing the conversation? Where are you guiding people next? Ideas: Invite them into your community Send a thoughtful follow-up email Ask for feedback Have 1:1 conversations Without this? The event fades. Fast. Redefining Event Success Success is not: “How many people showed up?” It’s: Who showed up What connections were made What conversations happened What continued after Sometimes a smaller room creates a much bigger impact. Protect Your Energy (This Matters Most) You can host a “successful” event… And still feel completely depleted. So: Build space before and after Set realistic expectations Don’t overextend just to impress Because if you’re drained, the event isn’t sustainable. Final Thought If you’re thinking about hosting an event, hold both questions: Should I do this?andHow do I do this well? Because this isn’t just about events. It’s about how you choose to build, connect, and show up.
