Ep. 15: Bailey Beeken on building SMASH and facilitating meaningful connections

from CanopyIQ · host Canopy

Bailey Beeken has helped transformed the senior care sales and marketing landscape like few people have. Her impact is difficult to overstate – she’s a mentor, a fearless mover & shaker, and an all-around innovator whose passion, grit and deep relationships have made the Senior Care Marketing and Sales Summit (SMASH) a reality.  Bailey moved mountains to grow SMASH from a niche gathering to a “can’t miss” Senior Care marketing and sales event. She has navigated the highly complex transition from the analog world through the dawn of digital marketing and advertising and made it look easy along the way.  As SMASH celebrates its 10-year anniversary, it seems only fitting to highlight ten fun facts from Bailey’s life experience:  1. Her philosophy is that "If you know 10% of how to execute a job you can make it work."  2. Bailey has been organizing conferences, trade shows and expos of all shapes and sizes for almost 35 years, at a time when there was no playbook for pulling off the near impossible.  3. She has deep roots in the New York R&B, Jazz and Rock and Roll music scene and produced concerts back in the day when record companies ruled the roost (and she has a Gold Record to prove it). 4. Bailey learned everything she needs to know about business from bartending and waitressing (which is a life experience I can absolutely relate to). 5. At the young age of 18 she’d experienced delivering cash in a paper bag to loan sharks and assorted low brow characters and at one point sold computers when they were essentially big boxes weighing 55 or more pounds and a five-inch display. 6. Bailey would trek to the public library on 42nd Street and peruse business magazines to see who had a trade show, determine which industries were exhibiting…and which ones weren’t. 7. She helped pioneer the advent of miniature golf courses through trade shows promotion after founding Fun Expo show manager. It turns out senior care is a lot like the senior living industry because its core mission is to provide happiness. 8. She loves acronyms. The Forensic Science and Crime Scene Technology expo was called FRENZY and the cast of characters who participated in that expo included everything from cops, forensic scientists, the CIA and even the guy who found Ted Kaczynski.  9. As VP of Film and Entertainment at e5 Global Media she launched Reality Rocks, a first in the Reality TV Awards category when the concept of interactive fan participation was just a concept in the expo space  10. She’s all in on AI and ChatGPT. You could even say she’s having a love affair with Chatty (more on that in the podcast)
