EP.15 - Jennifer Hoy Registered Psychologist - "You're Not Broken If You Have Experienced Trauma"

from Middle Fingers Up · host Kiran McKay

Welcome Jennifer Hoy registered psychologist who specializes in trauma informed therapy.  Today we dive into trauma and Jennifer answers, “what is trauma?” and shares with us her definition as well as what trauma means. In our conversation she simplifies the definition so we can better understand that if we have experienced trauma, we are not so far from it. We discuss what trauma could look like as it impacts us in our relationships with our spouse, partner, children, boss or others. We talk about what the body will do to survive and that it is not just what happened, but what we store in the absence of an empathetic witness. We explore how one is not broken if they experience trauma, and if therapeutic support is sought there is a chance to even thrive post significant event. We touch on a multitude of full episode subjects such as adoption, nature vs. nurture compared to nature and nurture, EMDR and the tiger in the room vs the tiger in the picture. Join us for this wide-ranging conversation with Jennifer as we explore the frequently misunderstood trauma and body connection. Resources:Books:What Happened to You?
