Ep 16: Mental Health in the Construction Industry with Robin Denton
from Counsellor Convos with Sheila McMahon
This week we have the amazing Robin Denton of Alpha construction speaking with us. 87% of the construction workforce are male and 50% are self employed. This means they have the compounded worries of pension contributions, when will the contracts last or end suddenly, when is the next job coming in, and overall financial stability. Not only this, but many will be taking on physically challenging jobs, meaning many will also be worrying about how they will keep their careers going into their 40s, 50, 60s, and even 70s. Robin believes the support systems in place are born of a good culture in the workplace. supporting, caring, empathetic organisations can build a healthy culture without it being noticed because it simply becomes 'a good place to work at'. Robin also advocates, and is, a mental first aider and advocates for health and wellbeing officers being embedded in the workplace too. A statistic in 2018 from the Building Mental Health Partnership states they've now trained over 10,000 mental health first aiders, including Robin here. We discuss pride, openness, self respect and responsibility, and support within the workplace (as well as how hard it is for those self employed!) This is not one to miss, folks.
