人類脊椎管內的脊髓尾端結束在第一或第二腰椎處，送出腰椎第二至第五以及薦椎第一到第五的神經根，在第二腰椎以下形成一束長長的神經纖維，以支配下肢、會陰部、外生殖器、膀胱及腸道的感覺、運動及內臟功能。這神經纖維束的形狀有如「馬尾」當此神經纖維束受到壓迫，而造成的症狀，稱為馬尾症候群（cauda equina syndrome）。
