In Indecent Proposal, a financially strained couple played by Woody Harrelson and Demi Moore accept a million-dollar offer from a wealthy stranger, portrayed by the late Robert Redford, for him to spend one night with Demi. What follows is not the erotic thriller we hoped for and more of a prolonged moral hangover, as money, desire, and resentment unravel the couple’s sense of certainty in increasingly predictable ways. The film aims for a provocative meditation on love and the commodification of humanity, but often settles into glossy melodrama that confuses serious looks with depth. Still, it’s an efficient snapshot of early-’90s tabloid-era “what would you do?” cinema, where the real indecency is how confidently it assumes the answer is worth two hours of runtime.
