主動脈剝離是主動脈的血管內膜撕裂，造成管壁剝離，在血管壁中形成假腔，導致主動脈的血流入此假腔，進而壓迫原來正常的血管腔，且主動脈的分支血管也可能因之阻塞，使器官缺血，發生腦中風、脊髓缺血、腎衰竭等，嚴重時病人會休克、突發性死亡。
