Ep.3) Logic + Emotions = Decision
from Culturisk Hosted by Martin and Stacy
Consumers everywhere interpret products and messages through the lens of culture: the shared values, norms, emotions, and meanings of their social groups. This episode shows that advertising must align with consumers’ values to influence behavior; pushing against the cultural tide risks losing the customer. In practice, this means marketing cannot rely on abstract rational appeals alone. Rather, effective campaigns tap into deep cultural beliefs and emotions – for example using familiar symbols, stories, or rituals that “feel right” in a given society. Classic theories like Hofstede’s dimensions (individualism vs. collectivism, power distance, etc.) and Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital remind us that tastes, status, and “right” vs. “wrong” are learned and differ by group. Social identity theory adds that people buy brands that reinforce their in-group identities, and ritual theory notes that embedding products into routines or festive rites can make them sacred (e.g. morning coffee rituals or holiday gifts). In short, culture shapes how people feel, trust, and decide – and so marketing must be culture-centric, not one-size-fits-all.
