Ep 40: Julie Klausner (Schmigadoon, Comedy, Broadway Theater) Julie and I talk about what it was like to write for Schmigadoon Season Two, growing up seeing Broadway musicals, working with Kids in The Hall, Cats, and much more. Julie Klausner is the creator, writer and star of Hulu’s critically-acclaimed Difficult People, produced by Amy Poehler and starring Klausner and Billy Eichner as two pop culture-literate, struggling comedians in New York City who hate everything in the world except for each other. She currently co-hosts, with Tom Scharpling, the podcast Double Threat, which was named one of the best podcasts of 2020 by Vulture and the A.V. Club, which wrote, "Double Threat sees podcasting giants Scharpling and Klausner harnessing their comedic chemistry to rip apart all the creeps and overpaid mediocrities that pollute the media landscape.” Julie also hosted the long-running How Was Your Week podcast which was called “one of the few essential podcasts” by the New York Times and named one of the best 10 comedy podcasts of the moment by Rolling Stone and GQ. Julie’s writing credits include: Apple TV Plus’s critically acclaimed and Emmy award-winning Schmigadoon!, Borat: Subsequent Movie Film, Tina Fey and Robert Carlock’s Mr. Mayor, the Kids In The Hall Amazon reboot and Billy On The Street, where she was Head Writer/ Co-EP for four seasons. She’s also written for Robert Smigel’s “TV Funhouse” on SNL and for the late Joan Rivers on a few different occasions. Her first book, I Don’t Care About Your Band, was released in 2010 and optioned for HBO by Gary Sanchez Productions as a series starring Lizzy Caplan. Her YA Novel Art Girls Are Easy was published in 2013. Julie recently guest-starred as “Maggie" on the final two seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Her voice acting credits include regular roles on Big Mouth and Bob’s Burgers and her “face acting” credits range from music videos for the New Pornographers to guest-starring roles on Fosse/Verdon and At Home With Amy Sedaris. She’s appeared as herself as a guest or panelist on, among others, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The View, Fresh Air with Terry Gross, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Today Show, and, of course, America’s Next Cat Star on Animal Planet. Julie’s editorial writing credits include pieces for the New Yorker, the New York Times, New York magazine, McSweeney’s, Salon and The A.V. Club.
