Ep.47 Overcoming Chaos and Finding Clarity: Rob Treppendahl’s Path to True Leadership

from Muddy Waters, Clear Vision · host Trility Partners

Rob Treppendahl grew up in a family where hard work and love were guiding principles, instilled early on by his father's words and example. With a strong emphasis on taking risks and striving for meaningful goals, Rob learned not only the value of dedication but also the confidence that comes from unwavering family support. Encouraged to pursue his dreams and embrace an entrepreneurial spirit, he carried forward the lessons of agency, resilience, and self-belief, always backed by the assurance that his family would be there no matter where his ambitions led him.1/ Meet Rob Treppendahl, Baton Rouge native, CEO of Treppendahl Landscape, AND executive coach. But today’s story isn’t about overnight success. It’s about risk, debt, failure, courage, AND redemption. #Entrepreneurship #LouisianaBusiness2/ Rob’s story starts with family: “Work hard, play hard. My dad taught us two things: how to love, and how to work.” With entrepreneurs on ALL SIDES of his family tree, running a business felt like destiny.3/ What was his first “business”? Not a lemonade stand…A gumball machine in a nail salon. He even learned the difference between how Skittles & Reese’s Pieces absorb nail salon “aroma” (hint: not all candy is created equal).4/ Rob chased freedom from DAY ONE: “I value the freedom to choose what to do with my time.” No 9-to-5, no “working for the man.” Everywhere he looked in his family, he saw people betting on themselves—and winning.5/ But here’s where it gets REAL. Early on, Rob obsessed over sales and growth, hiring on experience—not alignment or healthy team culture. Result? CHAOS. MASSIVE turnover. Constant firefighting. Growth with zero pleasure.6/ By 2015, his business doubled revenue in a year—sounds impressive, right? Behind the scenes: $400,000 of debt, a mutinous team, mental exhaustion, zero profitability, and the worst year of his LIFE.7/ Rob admits: “I was a prisoner of my own business. I would see someone mowing a lawn and wish I could trade places.”8/ The turning point? Through sheer vulnerability, he connected with a mentor at a NASCAR race—yes, really. That mentor convinced him to simplify, focus on profit, not just revenue, and build a TRUE leadership team.9/ Rob’s biggest realization: “If you want a REAL life, you must simplify your business enough to let other people run it. Systemize it. If it’s too custom, too complicated, you’ll never escape.”10/ He got RAW with his wife, went to a debt counselor, got brutally honest about the company’s finances AND stress. “That was probably my first real taste of accountability.”11/ It paid off. He focused on recurring, manageable work. Hired and grew his team. Turned stress into freedom—actually taking a month-long family trip to Hawaii while his company ran without him.12/ Here’s the gold: “Owning my story, shame and all, has made me a better leader, husband, dad—and now mentor to others.” Now, Rob helps business owners AVOID his mistakes through coaching and total transparency.13/ If you’re struggling as an entrepreneur—drowning in stress, chasing your own tail—it’s NOT just you. Rob was there. Leverage his lesson: Focus on profit, not just revenue. Build your team. Get honest with loved ones. SLOW. DOWN.14/ Biggest takeaways: • Growth ≠ Success. Simplicity & profitability win. • Vulnerability is a superpower. • Agency is worth more than any salary. • You’re not alone in the “mud.”15/ Want to hear the whole story?
