Ep. 5 Bridgetymology - Normal

from Meet Bridget · host Asha Gabriel and Keshiia Rosenberg

What does it mean to be normal? How did we come up with what is considered normal? and why is what is normal to one person abnormal to another?  We use this word every day. It is "normal".  However, when it first entered our vocabulary in the 17th century, it was only used by mathematicians and later adapted to the fields of anatomical and physiological science. Nowadays it is regularly interchanged with the word "ideal" as something intangibly imposed by our society, something that allows us to fit the standards. In today's episode, Keshiia delves into the historical origin of the word "normal". She explains how it has evolved over the centuries, whether we are correct in our linguistic usage of the word, the different concepts around it, when in history it began to take on a more sinister tone, how our definitions continue to shift over time, and much more! Asha and Keshiia want to know who you are and where you've been! Come hang out with them on Instagram @meetbridget. They can't wait to chat with you there!
