EP. 613『＠當麻、其ノ一 - よもぎは祈りのにおいがする』

奈良県の當麻（たいま）に行ってきました。當麻の名物、よもぎ餅「中将餅」を食べに朝早く向かったのですが、お店の前はもうすでに人でいっばいでした。売り切り御免の中将餅は、よもぎが搗き込まれた餅の上に、餡を控えめにのせたもの。なんといっても、食べた瞬間、お店が独自の畑で栽培しているというよもぎの香りが立ちのぼります。甘さよりもまずやってくるのは「野のにおい」です。名物というものは店先で完結していると思われがちですが、店の奥に見える畑から、本当はそうじゃないことに気がつきます。「當麻寺」を訪ねると中将姫が一晩で作り上げたと言われる「曼荼羅」も残っています。人はときどきことはそのものよりも、言葉が生まれる前の気配にうたれることがあります。當麻はそういう場所なのではないかと思います。
