笠間の道の駅では、この時期になると摘果メロンが人気です。摘果メロンは手のひらほどの大きさの若いメロンで、生のまま塩をつけて食べると、メロンのほのかな甘みとキュウリのようなみずみずしさが楽しめます。マヨネーズを添えたり、一夜漬けにしたりしても美味しく、午後には売り切れてしまうほどの人気です。また、道立派な自然薯も並んでいます。自然薯は地中深くまで伸びるため、掘り出して収穫します。皮をむくと真っ白で、土臭さはなく、森や落ち葉を思わせる香りがあります。粘りが強く、塩だけで味わうと自然薯本来の風味が引き立ちます。麦ご飯にかけると、とろろの粘りによって一層美味しくなります。笠間の土は自然薯の栽培に適していて、弥生時代や古墳時代の人々も食べていたのではないかと思わせる土地です。
